RCMP Ensigns, Colour, and Guidon: Symbols of History and Tradition
The Ensign
The ensigns of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are symbols of history and tradition, each unique to its own organization. They display the colours of the RCMP, representing the organization's service to Canada.
The Colour
Unique among police organizations, the RCMP possesses its own Colour. Following the traditions of light cavalry, the RCMP's Colour is a swallow-tailed flag. It is carried by the Colour Party, which is composed of the most senior officers in the RCMP.
The Guidon
The guidon is the RCMP's traditional regimental flag. It is based on the tradition of British Army cavalry regiments and is carried by the Guidon Party. The guidon is a scarlet and blue flag with the RCMP crest in the centre.
Centennial Flag
In 1973, the RCMP adopted a centennial flag to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its founding. The flag is a swallow-tailed design with a red maple leaf on a white background. It is flown at RCMP detachments across Canada.
